What was your first impression of GACKT?

GACKT isn’t the kind of person you meet every day, and for those of us who’ve stuck around, he’s certainly left an impression.

  1. I don’t quite remember where I got my first impression from- just a few songs and pieces of interviews. I got the impression of someone who was serious and brilliant but also controlling, perfectionistic and scary when angry.

    I don’t think any of that was exactly wrong, but the next thing I saw were the Utabon “I’m a Magnum” and “the hidden meat” interviews.

    …which painted him in quite a different light.

  2. I thought he was a very handsome man who was probably like every other rock star out there. After getting into his music and involved with the fandom, I think I was wrong. He’s not like every other rock star. (He’s still a very handsome man though. I wasn’t wrong about that.)

  3. I had a strange impression about him that made me interested and laughing at the same time. It’s because I first saw him in Domoto Kyoudai episode when he was sleeping live. I immediately developed an interest in that “sleepy idol”. Later on, that interest took a different trend: I started to like his talent, style, and more about him. <3

  4. I got my first impression since the first time I listened to his voice and music (like I said in my answer before,I knew him first from his voice and music,without any idea about his visual appearance or his personality). At that time,I felt my heart almost jumped because of his great voice..

  5. I remember I liked his music, but thought he looked… odd and intriguing. So I googled more about him, and soon found that, besides being a musician, he had also made a movie and wrote an autobiography and had been involved in several other projects, and I thought, ok, this guy seems to be interesting.
    After that my interest in him kept growing and growing, until it become something else, and now it’s like he’s part of the family. Weird as that may sound =P

  6. “Gackt is not a band?” – “Wait, how old is he? No way! Did he have any kind of plastic surgery or is he just really lucky?”. I always heard about GACKT and thought it was a band. When i googled him i found out GACKT is just one person. After that i started listening to his music.

  7. This is actually a funny story. I was doing a duel-writing project with someone, and she used a picture of him as inspiration for a character (specifically from Mizerable, the first single.) I commented, “Hey, he’s really nice looking; though he looks strange in that get-up.” That friend then told me who he was, that he was a singer, and shared the specific video for that song. I then looked up some interviews, and thought I was dealing with an overzealous macho-man. But I was wrong, especially after watching a few more interviews. What I see is someone thoughtful, playful and extremely zealous about his art. Sure, he’s not perfect, but he’s a good guy with a big heart.

  8. I saw him first time in a fanmade video. The way he looked and the fact that he was a japanese artist (it was something new for me) made me to want to hear him singing. Searching for a random song of his on Youtube, I found “Last Song”. The moment I heard his voice….it left me an impresion that he is not like the other artists who I saw until then. That he was unique in his own way. And he still is. I mean, I never been so dedicated to an artist before.

  9. When I 1st saw him (on Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ) he didn’t smile or show much emotion so he seemed brooding and kind of shy. 🙂

I suppose my very first impression was “If he’s a Japanese artist why does he have three straight consonants in his name and just how am I supposed to pronounce said name?” After finding out about him on a mailing list, I Googled around and pics of him intrigued me. (Can’t remember why exactly, maybe it was his costumes, maybe it was just that he was good looking.) When I finally heard one of his songs (“Lu:na” was probably the first) I was blown away. My impression was “This is an ARTIST.”

To tell the truth the first time I heard his voice I started crying, I felt relieved like I’d found something that I didn’t know I’d lost he seem’d oddly familiar and nostalgic it was strange like maybe i’d heard his voice somewhere before I’ve never been able to place where I’d heard it before though

  13. I thought “What an interesting man – Gackt!” And it was not his appearance that appealed to me first but ruther his views about life, determination, and of course, his truly artistic nature.

  14. *laughs* I though that he’s a rich famous guy with a pretty face and most likely a terrible character. After all the fist thing I saw of him was him in Vanilla PV, and Mizerable didn’t save him either. But his voice wouldn’t leave me alone, so I looked further into him, and there we go! Typicall case of “Nothing is what it seems!”

    Dear GACKTさん, I’m sorry for immediately judging over you back then, but hey, I still didn’t give up on you easily, did I!

  15. Well, the development of my first impression was something like this:
    Some famous guy in Japan==>Looks like he’s a nice actor==> Wait, he is a MUSICIAN?? (That’s when I got curious)==> (After watching PV) Wow, such a beautiful music and a sexy samurai!==> (After watching the dressing up part from SDSN) And funny! Now he’s getting really interesting…
    Well, something like this…

  19. “Wow, who IS that? He has an amazing voice!” Then I got a look at him, and was enchanted. The interviews were incredible, and I really grew to respect him as more than just a good-looking man.

  20. i admit I was musically captivated right away. After one or two of his songs on Youtube piqued my interest I ended up finding “Setsugekka” …and even without subtitles I found myself literally moved to tears by his passion and the beauty of the song. When I first began to discover him as a person he seemed pretty mysterious and stoic, though very strange (in a good way) at the same time~ And time has passed I’ve discovered much more about his shining personality.

  21. When i heard him: “Waa~ It’s amazing!” and i cried. When i saw him: “OmG, He… He, is real?….”

  22. At first I saw his photo and thought he looks like a girl.
    But after listening to Emu For my dear I realised how cool he is.

  23. at first.. for some years, I only knew Gackt by his voice. and I can say my first impression of him was his warm and calm voice

  24. it went very much like: *gasp!* “..where have you BEEN all my life?!” and then my jaw dropped to the floor and I had to remember to keep blinking lest my eyes get sore. hehehehe..
