Kono Dare mo Inai Heya de

Alone In This Room
When a feeling of peacefulness
prompted me to turn and look, you were always there
You were just… shyly
touching my fingertips

The beginning is always sudden
I fell in love with you on the street corner
You were just… smiling
giving me a mysterious look

Your slender body seems so fragile
leaving not a trace of your gentle smile from when we met
If it will open your eyes, I’ll talk at length about the reason for my tears…1

Why, in this lonely room,
is my body shaking?
Tell me…

I can’t forget the sight of you calling my name
in that little voice that is beginning to seem like it will vanish
It seems like if I turn around you’ll be there even now, just like you were back then…

Why, in this lonely room,
is my body shaking?
Tell me…

Why, in this lonely room,
are these tears overflowing?
Tell me…

Let me hold you one more time…

Both words mean “reason”, but perhaps 理由 is a little more in depth.

NOTES:
The title of this song is “kono dare mo inai heya de” while the lyrics are “dare mo inai kono heya de“. Both of them literally mean “in this room that has no one in it”, but the lyrics emphasize the lack of people. Unfortunately, in English, an “empty” room can be one with no objects in it, and “alone” can’t be used to describe a room, so we can’t express the exact same thing as the Japanese neatly.

The Japanese suggests without explicitly stating that the point-of-view character is alone with the deceased character.
