Sayonara

GACKT /*ALBUM TITLE lyrics

Sayonara… my precious loved one
The fallen tears change to snow
Sayonara… to who I was until yesterday, the one who was crying
Close your eyes quietly…

You casually pressed against my shoulder
and leaned on the windowsill
That slightly shy gesture
made me smile
I gently kissed you on the cheek
and watched as you walked away

Sayonara… my precious loved one
The fallen tears change to snow
Sayonara… to who I was until yesterday, the one who was crying
Close your eyes quietly…

On the little table
we put a dream just for us…
Even the unseen future
never frightened us
In the first album
you were looking happy
and I was looking at you softly

Sayonara… my precious loved one
Only my feelings for you are sure to remain
Sayonara… to who I was until yesterday, the one who was crying
It’s a quiet night, isn’t it?

I left the title as “sayonara” because it is generally understood by English speakers, and also because it is not quite equivalent to “good bye” in English. While you might easily say “sayonara” to someone you have a fairly distant relationship with, when used between people who are close, it implies that you expect to be separated for them for possibly a long time or forever.

In this sense, “farewell” might be a better translation for it, but there’s another song by that name.
